Reigate Beekeepers 2015 Honey Show was held on the 10th October in the Reigate Priory School Gym.
(Scroll down for the slide show.)
Our theme this year was Pollen and Pollination, and provided us with the opportunity to both celebrate and explain how and why Honey Bees gather pollen.
We presented displays showing how, in the process of gathering pollen as their source of protein, they also essentially pollinate the flowers we enjoy, and so much of the food we need.
A centrepiece to that display was a microscope, linked to a monitor screen, enabling visitors to either peer down the lens of the microscope or see the object on-screen … or both.
Complimenting this was a display of posters showing and describing many aspects of pollen, pollination … and the honey bees role.
As if this was not enough, because we know it can be a BIG issue for members of the public, there was a display about swarms and how Reigate Beekeeper’s Swarm Team swing into action and go about capturing them.
A video sequence was playing. showing just a few of this years exploits captured on camera.
Complimented of course with explanations presented about the why, what and how of swarming.
Elsewhere at our show, we provided our regular and popular stalls:
- Tombola – to try your luck at.
- Plant Sales – for the green fingered.
- Candle rolling – for the children.
- Mead tasting – for the adults!
- Observation Hive – for the curious
- Skep making demonstrations – for all.
- Refreshments including honey biscuits and a range of cakes, including as ever – Honey Cakes
- Sales of our members and our divisions honey and products of the hive – direct to you.
All of which were of course mere ‘side shows’ to the main attraction … the staging and judging of our members’ 156 Honey Show entries into 25 Competition Classes.
And everywhere, our members were to be found answering your questions about bees, beekeeping and Reigate Beekeepers.
If you were amongst our visitors, many thanks, we hope you enjoyed your time with us. We look forward to welcoming you either again or perhaps for the first time next year during October 2016.
In the meantime we will be popping up at Village Fairs, Fetes and Shows throughout Mole Valley, Reigate & Banstead and surrounding areas of Surrey during next summer to promote beekeeping and to offer our honey for sale.
