Asian Hornet – new BBC Film Report

“UK beekeepers on lookout for bee-eater?”

Filmed, edited and produced by Tony Smith, with additional camera work by Robert Hall, the 2.28 min video was published by the BBC on 3rd June 2020.

With news of a confirmed first sighting this year in mainland UK of Vespa velutina, the Yellow-Legged (Asian) hornet, this short film report provides a glimpse of the issues facing the honey bee (and inquisitive TV reporters perhaps) in the UK, if this non-native and REPORTABLE hornet becomes established here.

The Asian hornet is smaller than our native hornet and poses no greater risk to human health than a bee. However, they do pose a risk to honey bees.
