Reigate Beekeepers 2014 Honey Show was held on the 11th October in the Reigate Priory School Gym.
(Scroll down for the slide show.)
To mark this year being 100 years since the start of WW1, our show theme was ‘War Time Beekeeping’.
We sought to present and display beekeeping artifacts and memorabilia from the early 1900’s.
A centrepiece to that display were two films loaned to us by Screen Archive South East. One was of beekeepers, circa 1910’s inspecting a colony and hiving a swarm, and another was of the Reigate Borough 1927 Carnival.
Both provided entertaining and informative insights into times past.
Display panels also presented copies of photographs, documents and cuttings gleaned from the Surrey Archives related to beekeeping during and between WW1 and WW2.
Providing plenty of nostalgic colour to all this, were artifacts from the wars themselves and of beekeeping during those times.
Elsewhere at our show, we provided our regular and popular stalls:
- Tombola – to try your luck at.
- Plant Sales – for the green fingered.
- Candle rolling – for the children.
- Mead tasting – for the adults!
- Observation Hive – for the curious
- Skep making demonstrations – for all.
- Refreshments including honey biscuits and a range of cakes, including as ever – Honey Cake
- Honey Tasting – to experience the wonderful diversity of unprocessed, un-blended and unadulterated honeys.
- Sales of our members and our divisions honey and products of the hive – direct to you.
All of which were of course mere ‘side shows’ to the main attraction … the staging and judging of our members’ 192 Honey Show entries into 24 Competition Classes.
And everywhere, our members were to be found answering your questions about bees, beekeeping and Reigate Beekeepers.
The weather during the day could have been kinder, but the intermittent rain failed to deter the many who spent time with us. Amongst those visitors we welcomed was the Mayor of Reigate and Banstead, Councillor David Pay.
If you were amongst our visitors, many thanks, we hope you enjoyed your time with us. We look forward to welcoming you either again or perhaps for the first time next year on the 10th October 2015.
In the meantime we can now be found at the Farmers Market in REDHILL during every 2nd Friday of the month. And we will be popping up at many Village Fairs, Fetes and Shows throughout Mole Valley, Reigate & Banstead and surrounding areas of Surrey during next summer to promote beekeeping and offer our honey for sale.
Now do please browse the gallery of photos here that were taken on the day. And if you would like to know more about Reigate Beekeepers or beekeeping in general now, have a look through the information on this website or contact us directly using the on-line contact forms.
